Program Policies

Following is important information regarding the policies of New Student Orientation as they relate to new student and new student family programs. As a participant in an orientation program, you will be responsible for knowing this information. Orientation participants must abide by the policies stated below. These policies are established with the needs of the student in mind and are established to:
  1. Provide appropriate academic advising at orientation
  2. Provide accurate and up-to-date information on their student record
  3. Provide details regarding the fees associated with program attendance
  4. Outline expectations of student involvement at orientation.
We strongly recommend you print this page or bookmark it for future reference.
  1. Orientation participants will not make travel arrangements to attend orientation until they have received confirmation of the date of their assigned orientation session by email.
  2. New Student Orientation is unable to accept fax, phone, or email registrations. Day-of-program registrations are not allowed.
  3. If you have been admitted to two schools and one of those schools is a freshman-entry school (Architecture, Business, Engineering, Journalism, Music, School of The Arts) you will be assigned to an orientation session that corresponds to the freshman-entry school.
  4. You must arrive at orientation with your KU Online ID and password in order to enroll in your classes. Failure to know your KU Online ID and password will result in a delay in your enrollment.
  5. Advising and enrollment is contingent upon attendance at all interest sessions during the program.
  6. If you have taken college courses or earned dual credit while in high school you must submit official transcripts from the college granting the credit to the KU Office of Admissions prior to your assigned orientation program. Failure to supply information on all college credits completed will delay your advising and enrollment and could result in inappropriate course selection. If there is not time to send a transcript before orientation, bring an official transcript or a grade report to assist in advising.
  7. During orientation, you must enroll in the English composition course and in the mathematics course appropriate for your placement and academic program. Specifically, if you are admitted in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, you must continue to take English and mathematics courses until you have completed ENGL 102 Critical Reading and Writing (or ENGL 105, the honors equivalent), and MATH 101 Algebra or MATH 104 Pre-calculus Mathematics.
  8. If you do not plan on attending KU, please go to admissions.ku.edu and update your application. New Student Fee refund policies can be found here.
  9. If a registered guest does not plan to attend orientation, you must cancel your reservation in writing. Written cancellations must be received in our office by 5:00 p.m. one week prior to your assigned orientation program, otherwise you will be billed the guests(s) fee. The cancellation dates are listed on our website under Program Policies. Cancellations may be sent by letter, email, or fax to:

All guest(s) fees will be charged to your tuition assessment. The New Student Fee covers the student's orientation.
  12. While participating in the University of Kansas Orientation Programs, students must adhere to the standard of conduct required by the KU Code of Student Rights & Responsibilities (available at http://www.vpss.ku.edu/rights/index.shtml) as well as all state and federal laws. Controlled substances are prohibited and any related paraphernalia found will be confiscated. Possessing, consuming or furnishing alcoholic beverages and visible displays of intoxication during this university sponsored event is prohibited. Noncompliance with these policies will result in your dismissal from the orientation program and may affect your housing and academic status at the University of Kansas.

The New Student Fee must have been paid at least one day prior to registering for an orientation session. If you have not paid the New Student Fee, you will receive an error message after entering your KU Online ID and password on the next page.
